The Savior

The fortune of a model

Preserved inside the diocesan museum on the upper floor of the sacristy of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, the panel represents the full-figure blessing Savior, silhouetted against a gold background embellished with punched details, and testifies to the success of the Christological model of the so-called Madonna of the Challenge.

Dressed, in this case too, in a long, finely decorated tunic, the Savior has blood spurts on the stigmata. This has led to the suggestion that the iconography is linked to what is evoked in the Gospels of John and Matthew: Christ the high priest, as a suffering servant.

Attributed to Paolo Serafini da Modena and datable to the second half of the fourteenth century, the panel is probably derived from the same draft from which the Savior of the Madonna della Sfida came.
