Church of the Annunziata

Founded by the Flagellants, it is an example of the reuse of ancient fragments and houses precious works from the sixteenth century

The church, with the tall spire of its bell tower, dominates the declining profile of the historic center of Venafro that lies at the foot of the castle. Although it appears in a guise resulting from an eighteenth-century restoration, it dates back to the late Middle Ages, when it was founded by the Flagellants of the city. This is demonstrated by the construction methods and the extensive reuse of ancient fragments, such as the two granite columns on the sides of the facade portal and the remains of reliefs and epigraphs in the walls. Even the interior, which still preserves sixteenth-century paintings, and up to a few years ago housed a precious alabaster antependium of English production from the fifteenth century (now in the Castello Pandone Museum), presents itself in a rich late Baroque guise. The Annunziata hospital, probably linked to the church, was in another area of the city, along the road between the center and the cathedral, and was demolished at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
