Church of San Pietro

Under the protection of the Blessed Sacrament

A few steps from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, the oratory of San Pietro was built by the ancient archconfraternity of the Santissimo Sacramento. Construction started in 1549 on the area of a 12th century church, San Pietro, near the Castle, which was later destroyed.

The current building dedicated to the most important of the apostles has a very simple façade and a carved wooden portal (1599), surmounted by a tympanum featuring a relief depicting Saint Peter. Thanks to an inscription we know the date of its completion: 1595.

The interior has a single room covered by trusses, while the side walls are marked by a double order of blind arches on pilasters.

Among the Renaissance works preserved, a fragment of a sixteenth-century fresco detached from solid wood and depicting the Madonna and Child, of uncertain provenance, and the sink in the sacristy should be noted.
