Saint Anthony of Padua

The effigy of the Saint in the Franciscan temple

Executed on a curved panel placed above an altar it was not intended for, this Saint Anthony of Padua towering over a landscape is characterized by the usual iconographic attributes: habit, lilies and a book.

The painting is interesting as a record of the fortune of Venetian models in Puglia but the original location of the work is unknown, as is the name of its author.

Despite the first references to Vivarini and Crivelli, scholars today tend to consider the painting the work of an artist active in Puglia, sometimes recognized in the so-called "Maestro ZT", a painter who combines the Adriatic language with a whole series of mutated influences borrowed from Byzantine tradition.
