Built in the highest part of the city, in the Renaissance it was turned into a splendid noble residence
The castle is of early medieval origin, built at the foot of the Sant'Angelo hill, close to the ancient urban layout.
In the fifteenth century it came into the possession of the Pandone family, powerful counts of Venafro, who carried out important restoration and expansion works, with the aim of turning the fortress into a sumptuous residence, according to the taste of the time.
Of particular interest among these are the creation of a precious loggia with arches on the side facing the city, and the decoration of the interior with frescoes depicting the horses from the family stables.
Raised at the castle, the horses were painted when they were donated to other nobles and members of the Crown, testifying, among other things, to the dense network of relationships the city counts cultivated.
The coats of arms and the rich fresco decoration in the upper part of the reception hall are preserved from the time the Lannoy family owned the castle, after they succeeded the Pandones after 1528.

Enrico Pandone
The Son of the Count of Venafro and an Aragonese princess, he also became related to the powerful Acquaviva d'Aragona house, marrying a daughter of the Marquis of Bitonto.
The cycle of frescoes, perhaps attributable to a Neapolitan workshop, portrays the horses owned by the Count of Venafro, Enrico Pandone, and covers the walls of the rooms on the main floor of the Castle.
