Exceptional relic of thirteenth-century art in Teggiano
The pulpit of the cathedral of Teggiano is signed and dated (1271) by the sculptor Melchiorre, commonly but erroneously known by the nickname "da Montalbano", who was also responsible for the main door of the Cathedral of Rapolla (dated 1253).
The passages of a previous pulpit, dating to the end of the 12th century, have also recently been traced, namely the panels of Matthew, Luke and Mark, the supports and the capitals.
The rebuilding of the ambo was probably entrusted to Melchiorre, as was the main door of the church, because the building was considered ruined and in need of restoration. The works ended in 1274, when it was reconsecrated.
The pulpit would obviously have undergone changes even after the Council of Trent, and in particular around 1586, when the church was elevated to the rank of co-cathedral
