Painted in 1487 on a large wall of the refectory of the convent of the Pietà, the fresco depicts the Journey to Calvary, with Christ carrying the cross surrounded by numerous figures, including some members of the clergy, male and female saints, nuns and Franciscan friars.
The theme and chronology have been linked to the crisis that the Sanseverino family went through in the aftermath of the Conspiracy of the Barons, with Alexander's escape to France in 1486
