Mourning of Christ

A high example of the Renaissance tradition of the Mournings

Among the most significant works preserved inside the church of the Pietà in Teggiano, the Mourning over the Dead Christ, attributed to Giovanni da Nola and collaborators, is a sculptural group in painted wood created in the early sixteenth century.

Placed in an elevated position in the apse of the church, it has six figures: the deposed Christ, Mary Magdalene, Saint John, of higher quality and probably by the master's hand, the Virgin and the two repoussoirs, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, which have been suggested to be by Pietro Belverte. Also, it has been hypothesized to have been commissioned by the Sanseverino, specifically by Roberto II, son of Antonello.
