Fregio dorico

From the tomb of a Roman veteran, it testifies to the reuse of ancient fragments in the cathedral

Reused outside the central apse of the Cathedral, and placed between two Ionic friezes, based on the typological characters it can be dated to the third quarter of the 1st century BC, even though, due to the persistence in the municipal context of formal languages that sometimes were not updated, the dating could be earlier. It is likely that it was part of the sepulchral monument of one of the veterans who settled in this area with the land distributions carried out by Munazio Planco. In fact, the funerary purpose of the frieze is evident, corroborated by the depiction of the lion, considered to symbolize the guardian of the tomb.
