Barone family

Present in various parts in the Kingdom, they occupied a prominent position among the noble families of Tropea

The Barone family was part of the Tropea nobility in 1567, but questions on their origins remain unanswered. According to some they were originally from Provence, reaching the Kingdom with Charles I of Anjou, while others maintain their origin to be Neapolitan or at least from Campania. However, the family had many branches, also settling in Nola, L'Aquila, Sora and Puglia. The Calabrian branch reached Mesiano, and from there Tropea, in the 15th century, where it occupied an important position. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, numerous members of the  Barone family were elected mayors, and it is known that at least three members of the family took part in the famous battle of Lepanto. What remains of their commission is the statue of Saint Paul, once in the main altar of the Cathedral of Tropea, whose bench also bears the coats of arms of two other noble families of the city: the Galluppi and the Carbonara.
