Romano family

From Nicotera to Tropea, they became part of the city nobility and patrons of the Madonna del Popolo by Giovann'Angelo Montorsoli

The family settled in various cities in Campania, as well as in Nicotera, Calabria. From here, in 1568 Gilberto Romano moved his residence to Tropea and was included in the local nobility. However, the Romano family was already present in the city, though not among the noble families. From the beginning of the 17th century there were mayors of Tropea belonging to the family.

In the mid-sixteenth century the three Romano sisters, Covella, Diana and Pressidia together with the canon and treasurer Francesco Nomicisio, commissioned the statue of the Madonna del Popolo in the cathedral, bearing the coats of arms of the two families on its base.
