Galluppi family

A lineage with a prominent role in the city's society

An ancient noble family known from the 13th century, with various branches, the first one of which settled in Tropea. The presence of the Galluppi family in 15th and 16th century society of Tropea was wide reaching and pervasive, with many members holding the office of mayor of the city.

The family, which lived between Calabria and Naples during the time of the Viceroyalty, systematically contracted marriages with the most influential families of the Tropea patriciate and also acquired several fiefdoms.

The prestige achieved by the Galluppi of Tropea is demonstrated by important artistic commissions, mainly concerning the cathedral, where the tomb built  for himself and his children by the noble Antonello (1599) can be admired. Other noteworthy members of this family include Cesare, captain of the Spanish army who moved part of the family to Messina, and Giulio Cesare, author of legal works.
