Caterina Concublet

Client of one of the most significant transformations of the Cathedral

Member of an influential Norman family of Germanic lineage, she was the daughter of Giordano, count of Arena and Miletus, who had held prestigious positions for the Angevin court, such as chamberlain of Joanna I and Justiciar of Calabria at the behest of King Ladislaus of Durres.

In 1392 she became countess of Gerace, by marriage with Giovanni Caracciolo, who held the count's lordship of the important center of Calabria ultra.

A famous and munificent personality, the start of the construction site of the chapel of San Giovanni Battista, today dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, in the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Gerace, is certainly attributable to her patronage.

She contributed to the transformation of the presbytery area of the building and of its front towards Piazza della Tribuna, which at that point took on its characteristic profile with two aligned apses.

In her will, Caterina chose the church of San Francesco d'Assisi as her burial place, and ordered the construction of her own chapel, dedicated to Santa Maria de Jesu.
