Tombstone of Atanasio Chalkeopoulos

Tombstone of the bishop of the Latin rite in Gerace

The tombstone of the bishop of Gerace Atanasio Chalkeopoulos, an erudite prelate from Constantinople near Bessarion, was created in 1585 by order of the prelate Ottaviano Pasqua in order to magnify his figure in the context of an overall liturgical and symbolic renewal of the Cathedral.

Pasqua, author of a very precious literary work of erudite tone on the lives of the bishops of Gerace, showed great interest in the biography of Chalkeopoulos. He had his remains, which remained incorrupt, disinterred from their original position under an earthen tomb in the left nave of the Cathedral, near the ancient piers of the lustral water.

The new plaque, currently placed on the central right pillar, bears a commemorative inscription which, in addition to mentioning the commissioner of the work and the date, places emphasis on the virtues of Chalkeopoulos, who had been appointed to the diocese of Gerace at the time of Pope Pius II Piccolomini.

In 1651, Bishop Vincenzo Vincentini had the tombstone opened again to verify the state of the remains of the Constantinopolitan prelate.
