Funeral monument of Ottaviano Pasqua

The sepulchral memorial of one of the most eminent and erudite bishops of Gerace in the second half of the sixteenth century

The monument celebrates the memory of the bishop of Gerace Ottaviano Pasqua, a distinguished Genoese prelate, nephew of Simone Pasqua, presbyter cardinal of San Pancrazio fuori le mura.

Its creation dates back to 1591, the year of the death of the Gerace prelate, commissioned by the apostolic prothonotary Marcello Malarbì, vicar general of the diocese. At the same time he established the location of Pasqua’s burial at the base of the pillar on which the bust and the commemorative epigraph are set. The bust is placed on the top of an arched pediment, whose curvilinear profile is broken on the sides of the effigy. The central section of the arch thus rests with artificial elegance on the two underlying coils which support the coat of arms of the deceased. The aedicule with stylized profiles is flanked by shelves surmounted by old-fashioned imperial profiles and frames an inscription which recalls the role assumed by Pasqua in the reform towards the Tridentine norms.
